“I’ve often said there’s nothing better for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse.”
- Ronald Reagan
Rockaway retired from the Coral Gables Police Dept. This Off the Track Thoroughbred was adopted by Ofc. Ashley Sheran who offered him to her agency in an effort to reintroduce the Mounted Patrol Unit after over 40 years since they last utilized a horse.
Rockaway underwent “kissing spine” surgery in 2024, and has recovered well, but required significant medical intervention to continue working and it was decided that he should be medically retired at 15 years old.
Ghost was born in August, 2007 in Angola State Prison, Louisiana, and joined the Mobile Police Department in 2017. He was eventually paired with Ofc. David Joiner and, together, they earned numerous awards, as Ghost improved consistently in his new role. Most notably, he received a Commander’s citation for his work during a deadly New Year’s Eve shooting in 2022.
Unfortunately, Ghost has a medical condition involving his suspensory ligaments that warranted medical retirement with assurance that he would never be ridden again. Without a workload to carry, he is thriving in his new home with his pasture buddies.
McCoy was a show horse prior to working for the Ft. Lauderdale Police Dept. At 24 years old, while still sound and working regularly with his primary rider, Ofc. Tracy Figone, he was given the gift of retirement so that he could enjoy his golden years with us (and Rockaway). Two weeks later, he got Ghost too!
